Locative Media and Emplacement

The first day of the conference will discuss the emergence and uses of locative media. This will explore various ways in which new developments in mobile and locative technology can encourage engagement and social interaction.

Presenters range from artists and technology developers who are leading innovative programmes of work, organisations who focus on context in commissioning art work, and writers and sociologists exploring issues of location and contemporary emplacement.

Saturday 29 October, 10am - 4pm

The second day of the conference will explore the influence and cultural significance of computer gaming. This includes gaming strategy, the nature of play, user engagement and audience integration. Games offer interactive narratives and, using networked computers and locative media, meaningful social interaction can now be played out. Presenters from theorists, computer games designers, and artists will explore gaming in a contemporary context.

The Festival of Creative Technology will introduce an international panel exploring the festival’s themes and related programme. These include artists, curators, technology developers, producers, critics and theorists who are leading innovative programmes of work and research, focusing on context in commissioning art work, the nature of play, and examining issues of location and contemporary emplacement.

Over two days, a diverse range of unique and challenging presentations, one-to-ones, chaired discussion panels and open mic sessions will provide a platform for lively contemporary debate.
